Video card on laptop ??
To get a really good experience with Vista on laptops, the minimum amount of RAM suggested would 1GB of RAM, if you want the full Aero experience, translucent windows and animation, then you need a laptop that supports the WDDM, Windows Display Driver Model which has still not been determined, wait until beta 2 or WinHEC 2006 to find that out. Processor speed, I would wait on a laptop with at least a Dual Core processor to make Vista behave itself. There is still a lot to be done. But to get a good experience, these are my recommendations, as for Security software, the only thing you really need to buy is good AntiVirus, Avast is a good bet. -- -- Andre Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta FAQ for MS AntiSpy http://www.geocities.com/marfer_mvp/FAQ_MSantispy.htm "Piglet" wrote in message

Yeh, anything with 1GB RAM or more should be great. If you check out www.zacknet.co.uk/vistabase, click on Graphics in the left menu, and then the ATI and NVidia device drivers bit, you can see a full list of supported hardware.

1GB DDR/DDRII RAM >3.0GHz CPU ATi or Nvidia graphic card(>128MB ram) That should be great :P
I used to use 2.0GHz P4 CPU 224MB DDR400 RAM SiS650 graphics until Vista 5270
It seems that the 5270 cantains a default WDDM driver for only Ati and Nvidia graphics.
Now my computer is : P4 2.0 overlock to 2.2GHz (northwood) 512MB DDR400 RAM ATi 9550(256MB GDDRII RAM 450/700MHz^_^) It can run Vista 5270 with a nice look. but a little slowly when I play some 3D games. I think 1GB RAM will be OK. ^_^
We must also take into account that this is still BETA 1 code, they have not turned on the performance optimizations yet. Look forward to that in BETA 2. -- Andre Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta FAQ for MS AntiSpy http://www.geocities.com/marfer_mvp/FAQ_MSantispy.htm

Drivers are constantly being added into Vista as standard, as I found out when I installed 5270 and Aero Glass suddenly started working :o) So, who knows... maybe in the next CTP you'll me *magically fixed!*

I think Microsoft will optimize all the code at last. Till now, comparing to 4051 or other 40XX version. The code's execution efficiency has been rised very much :P
I remember running 4074 on 256MBs of RAM, it would crash on boot up and sidebar was Memory hogs best friend. -- -- Andre Windows Connect | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta FAQ for MS AntiSpy http://www.geocities.com/marfer_mvp/FAQ_MSantispy.htm "ɵ×Ó" wrote in message

2GB+ if you want to put lagging file swapping, busy hard disk blinking lights to rest...

The video card depends on the resolution...
Yes you can have 128MB GPU and say "it's great", but that'll probably imply that it's running on 1024 x 768 or at best 1280 x 1024.
With today's 200+DPI LCD monitors I don't see how 128MB GPU can handle Aero Glass anymore in the future. Tomorrow's 200DPI is today's 72DPI.
You'll find a lot of notebooks such as ones from Dell that come with 1680 x 1050 resolution, and that's just the beginning for the HD era. With PC moving to the plasma or LCD screens measuring up to 60"+ 1920 x 1080 is like today's XGA.
Also... all today's GPUs are not WGF 2.0 compliant. The GeForce 7800 is WGF 1.0-compliant but that's still DirectX 9 - old technology. When Vista ships the "ideal" experience can be obtained by a WGF 2.0-compliant GPU with *at least* 1GB VRAM for anything Vista-era like a 1920 x 1080 LCD.

Depends on if you want the Designed for Windows Vista label on your laptop. Just joking, if you want a laptop for your purposes, I recommend *at least*:
CPU: Intel Core Solo / AMD Turion 64 RAM: 1024MB RAM HD: 40GB (without storing videos) / 80GB (storing videos) GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Go / ATI Mobile Radeon X800 LCD: 1400 x 1050 (4:3) / 1680 x 1050 (16:10)
For the CPU, AMD Turion 64 is more future-proof than Intel Core, since it's a genuine 64-bit processor. The RAM limit on the 32-bit Intel Core is shattered...
The video card fits well the the monitor resolution for full Aero Glass graphics, and should handle some WGF 2.0 (DirectX 10) applications and games too.
You know what? This computer is way too powerful for some of your tasks like Photoshop and Office. But Photoshop CS3 might use WGF, who knows?
I don't want to offend anyone here, but from my experience, I don't find the performance penalties to justify for full-time anti-virus protection. I've used four computers on the Internet for several years now and I've never caught a virus except for Blaster, and Windows XP SP2 solved all my virus worries. There's the installation issue too with anti-virus software that it could interfere with proper software installations.
If you want a secure computer, install Windows XP SP2+ or Windows Vista, set everything to default security settings, and most importantly, be wary of Internet sites and the files you open. Office 2003 did a good job of blocking out viruses without the need of an anti-virus software. Besides, how often do you receieve a file from your friends that are ..exe? All files I get from people are .doc, .jpg, and other virus-resistant file types.
You can ignore my advice, but all I know is: if things are set up right and you are cautious, you can live without anti-virus software.
Thanks.
